I went into this game quite blindly and not knowing what type of experience I would discover.  Road Not Taken is a surprisingly well created puzzle game with a very interesting twist.  SpryFox has somehow captured a puzzle style game with a strong theme based upon hope amongst strangers.

You are a hooded ranger who gets caught in the middle of a terrible blizzard and conveniently find a boat that takes you to a snowy and lowly populated town.  Upon arriving, you notice many mothers are missing their children and the mayor places the task of finding them on you.  Each level is technically a grid based area that has little to no explanation as to what can be done to solve the puzzles and save the children.  A little trial and error is at stake when combining items found within the area to create new and possibly more useful ones.

You can use your magical staff to pick up objects on the screen and toss them or carry them to combine or gather items together.  If you carry them you will gradually lose stamina (blue flame) and if you toss them then you won’t lose any, which is a better option if its a good choice.  Wildlife and harmful beings are all about in the areas and will move around sometimes eating, blocking or harming you and other needed items.

rnt1

Road Not Taken is a quirky, yet original game that somehow captures you and makes the town and its people an unforgettable adventure.  At times it can be overly frustrating while figuring out the solutions to the areas, but feels worth it once accomplished.  Just try not to leave any children behind if possible or some mothers will be upset and scold you for giving up on their little ones.

The visuals of Road Not Taken have a very welcomed unique style with smooth animations and unforgettable character designs.  The music is very repetitive in nature, but fits the atmosphere and the characters have an all around similar cache of effects which can all be muted if desired.

The Recommendation

The folks at SpryFox have created a very original puzzle game that will make you scratch your head for a questionable solution.  All in all this game is a fantastic take on a grid based puzzle game that uses your imagination and curiosity to solve everything it has to offer.  As of right now it is free for PS+ users, but will shortly resort to a full price of $14.99 and is a great title for any puzzle fanatic.
