I love horror games to the max, even though a part of me does get a little tense and nervous because honestly who wants a creepy freak coming at their face or possibly worse.  So like most gamer’s, I played this during the daytime, I tried the night once and realized every noise I heard outside I was looking out the window wondering.  Outlast begins with you as a reporter named Miles, who gets a tip about illegal activity going on at the Mount Massive Asylum.  So like every nosy reporter, he grabs his high tech video camera that has night vision on it and heads to the psych ward.  The only thing that sucks about this game is I feel they made the character a little weak, should have allowed pushing or something to add a little more to the gaming aspect.  Okay, so now that I complained for a second, the game play allows you to use your night vision camera, which kills the batteries a lot faster than in normal mode.  While running around you will try and find batteries to help keep your only tool working.  Also, while running around, the mutated psycho freaks will chase you down and search for you, all you can do is turn and run and find a place to hide.  If they see you hide, they will pull you out of wherever you tried for and try and kill you.

Outlast is brutally graphic and I love that.  I am all about blood, guts and gore and Outlast completely delivered on that notion.  The graphic details of the blood splatter to the hanging bodies to the crazy scare factors will get your tension rising and your heart racing.  The characters look amazing too, they are like mutated science fair projects that are either completely insane and care nothing about you being around or there are the ones that are trying to kill you and argue over which organ they get before the others.  The visuals in this game are amazing, especially how detailed the headless bodies, multiple cut off heads, and the mouths moving to the words being said.  The voice acting is pretty good too, the only issue that I really had with it is the main character breathes pretty loud when hiding from the bad guys, could have made him quieter or press a button to keep quiet maybe.

The music is creepy as hell.  The music will have you on edge as you are walking throughout the corridors and dark halls.  I love when you are getting closer to an area the music gets this creepier buzzing sound and it will have you freaking you out.  If one of the mutated goons do find you or are chasing you, then the music will speed up from the scary slow tense feel to that urgency to get away before you are victimized.

While trying to figure out how to get out of that hell, you will come around documents that can be collected and tell creepy little tales of what the employees would think of patients or the happenings with their patients.  The game does a very good job making it creepy and thought provoking as well.  As you progress through this terror, not only will you be trying to keep alive from the ugly nut jobs, you will also be solving puzzles to be able to move on to the next area.  In the beginning you will be turning on generators and as soon as you hit the buttons to move forward in the puzzle, they will burst through the door so it is imperative to hide immediately or most likely death will be in your future.

The Recommendation

I loved Outlast because it is definitely one of the most scary, terrifying, and heart pounding games I have ever played.  The graphics are phenomenal, especially the detail to the mutants and the scenery.  There was definitely a lot of thought put into this game and it truly shows in the product.  The only complaints I have with the game is that when the main character is hiding, he is breathing way to loud not to be caught.  Also, I think a shove button could have been added or something to that extent only because if you were about to die, you wouldn’t just sit there and let them beat you to death.  I love that they made the effort with the batteries to make you search around to keep your most important tool working.  If you are into play scary ass games at night to get the effect of most likely needing new under pants then get this game and enjoy.  If you are afraid to play scary games in the dark then get this game and play it during daylight hours because you will completely missing out.  I can not say get this game enough!!
