The video game universe is saturated with countless amounts of zombie titles.  From Super Nintendo’s Zombies Ate My Neighbors, to PlayStation’s Resident Evil and Silent Hill and more recently the Wii U’s ZombiU, consoles are littered with blowing the brains out of countless undead.  Tom Create’s game Escape from Zombie City takes a lesson from the games that game before it and pack it into a nice little bundle for the Nintendo 3DS eShop that plays more like a high-score arcade shooter and less of a story driven title.

In story mode, you take control of Johnny Johnson, an infantry soldier that just has to survive the night.  The cut scenes are reminiscent of Advanced Wars, but don’t do enough plot-wise to keep things interesting.  The length of the story mode is around 3 to 5 hours depending on your skill, which feels just right given the style of play.  The other mode of play, Endless mode, is an arcade enthusiasts dream. You battle your way through hordes of Zombies to get the best score possible.

Both modes in Escape from Zombie City have the same style of game play.  Players are stuck in a narrow screen with an overhead view where you are over run by tons of undead.  Weapons range from a shotgun to a grenade, machine gun or flares.  Ammunition is quite scarce so thankfully the pistol has unlimited ammo (with limited range unfortunately).  To mix up the action, you will need to find a key or rescue civilians as side tasks, all while trying to survive the Zombie Apocalypse.

The graphics are bland and really look like the game was ported from a mobile device.  I did enjoy the anime look of the cut scenes though. The soundtrack isn’t much better.  The really aren’t any memorable tunes or themes that you will feel it necessary to tap your foot or nod your head to. And the total lack of a 3D effect is bewildering, considering the game is on a 3D console.

Escape from Zombie City is an average game in very crowded 3DS eShop market.  Zombie game lovers or old school arcade fans may find a gem here, but in a place where you can get games like SteamWorld Dig, Gunman Clive or other brilliant indie titles, this game gets lost in the shuffle.

Managing Partner / Editor for Sony/Nintendo I prefer Indies to AAA titles... unless it's Nintendo or Sony Google+ Author
