By now, if you have read any of my reviews, you should know my appreciation and love for old school platforming.  CoderChild’s Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot was a game that interested me when I heard of it’s release.  By the name alone I figured this game would be no easy task to overcome, so I braced myself for a thousand deaths.

A thousand deaths was in fact what I got.  Cubit starts you off of the “soft” difficulty, which believe me, is not very  “soft” at all.  You have no lives in this mode, instead it counts your deaths.  After you hit the hundred mark, you really no longer feel good about yourself!  In hardcore mode, you get 3 lives and have to try to collect stars that are in ridiculously hard to get places.  The soft mode felt “hardcore” enough for me.

Cubit in all has 6 levels that are laid out in a tree path similar to Star Fox.  In order to place through every level, you will have to place the game at lease 3 times through.  The replayability comes in trying to unlock new characters and unlock all the the achievements.  The game play only uses one button.  You can press any input button on the 3DS but they all do the same thing, jump.  The game plays similar to the bit.trip runner series or the Rayman iOS games.  It is fun and challenging but I always enjoy the sense of exploration in my platforming games.

The graphics are very basic but work well for what CoderChild is trying to accomplish.  The techno soundtrack is pretty catchy and I loved that some of the beats went in time with me making a really difficult jump.  I felt like this mechanic really immersed me more into the game.

I would recommend this title to only the sadistic bastards that like to play extremely difficult platformers.  I would be lying to you if I didn’t say this game at moments literally wanted to make me rip out the little hair that I have left.  I left impressed by the game but the difficulty and shortness may not be for everyone.
