Within the past year or so, 2D games have made a huge comeback in the video gaming industry.  While there are many 3D titles flourishing in the market, there are still numerous amounts of quality 2D experiences worth your time.  Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is one of those 2D games worth playing and well worth the small price of $7.99.  DrinkBox Studios originally released Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack on the PS Vita and have now released this on the PS3 with crisp 1080p visuals.  If any have played the first game called Tales From Space: About A Blob, then they will surely feel at home with this new addition.

The game focuses around a mean ol’ grumpy mutant blob from space that escapes and starts roaming around different locations like a college and even an army base.  As you move your blob around the levels, you will be eating anything you seem to roll over and will increase in size the more you consume.  There are even two little blobs to be found in the levels as well, which add to the OCD of being a completionist on each stage.

The controls in Mutant Blob Attacks are very simple and perfect for what needs to be accomplished.  From using a flying rocket ability or being magnetized along pipes to maneuver safely from spikes or lasers, it never seems frustrating to achieve.  There is a Katamari Damacy type feel when you need to eat enough to grow bigger just to consume a larger object and progress.  As you complete levels, you unlock bonus stages that utilize the motion controls of the Sixaxis to control top down views of labyrinth style boards or levels consuming as much as possible.  The Sixaxis controls are very bothersome and uneasy to use and would’ve been better left with the analog sticks to minimize frustration.

Tales From Space: MBA has a great clean visual style with an older generation in mind if noticed.  Animations are very well done and the physics of the blob have a fantastic semi-real oozy jiggled moving effect.  The music is fitting and the sound effects are as good as expected from this style of game, which isn’t a bad thing.  There is a very quiet humor to be found in this game as well; from the background events going on, cans of “hipster juice” or even reference’s to Guacamelee!

The Recommendation

Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attacks is a very well executed 2D puzzle/platformer and fits the bill with many around today.  Even though the levels aren’t very long, this game still holds well as a fun and pleasing adventure.  DrinkBox Studios is a very talented gaming studio and don’t disappoint with their titles and for $7.99 it is priced just right for the content it holds.  The Sixaxis controls were a big gripe for me and I wish there was an option to change control styles for the bonus stages, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the game to the very end and feel most 2D platformer fans will love it all the same.
