Pixel Slime U is the newest title to hit the Wii U eShop from publisher/developer RC Madiax. It is also the second mobile port they have brought to the eShop with the first being Don’t Crash. Pixel Slime U is a perpetual motion platormer that has you jumping gaps, on to platforms and avoiding spikes to reach the end goal while trying to die as little as possible. Sounds easy enough and in the beginning it is. However, things go horribly awry and the stages start rotating, swaying, flipping and more all to make the goal that much harder to reach. While at times they can cause disorientation or dizziness RC Madiax seems to be aware and suggest taking breaks every 10 to 15 min. At first while this may feel as though its a cheap mechanic just to inflate the difficulty these events also help to bring a bit of variety to the games stages which is welcomed.

This is because unfortunately all 40 of the games stages consist of the same blue platforms and blackish grey striped background which do begin to feel repetitive and lack personality. This was made more apparent to me thanks to the design of the main character. Yes it is just a ball of slime with one large eyeball, but it definitely has something going for it on the design perspective of things. I think both the game and Slime would have benefited from more local variations and even a larger more diverse gameplay experience. But Pixel Slime U delivers exactly what it meant to, a difficult perpetual motion platformer with tight controls and simple graphics.

On the sound side of things you get the usual jumping sound effects and a nice light splat when you fall you hit spikes nothing spectacular but the audio gets the job done with out being distracting. Pixel Slime U supports off-TV play and when you are finished tell you You’re Awesome and encourage you to post your death count to Miiverse. I finished the game with a total of 300 deaths total for its 40 stages after all was said and done.

The Recommendation

First off let’s get this out of the way. Yes I am aware of the types of titles RC Madiax releases and there are some that are not a fans based on quality or whether or not they “deserve” to be on the eShop. Well they do. The more styles of games we have the better the industry is and will be for it.

Now Pixel Slime U sits right in the middle for a RC Madiax title. It definitely doesn’t reach the levels of fun or personality of the Blok Drop series, but also doesn’t hit the low that Pentapuzzle did for me. It sits somewhere in the middle. While I did enjoy my play through Pixel Slime U it is one of the few RC Madiax titles I wont be returning to. That being said if you are a fan of RC Madiax and the type of titles they provide you won’t regret your purchase.

Lover of all genres and systems though admittedly a HUGE Nintendo fan. I'm all about the joy and fun the experience of playing a videogame brings. I say "Play games not systems". -Someday you will be old enough to start playing Nintendo games and reading comic books again- Me.
