TellTale Studios has done it once again.  With last year’s title “The Walking Dead” receiving Game of the Year awards, TellTale set a new standard in the point-and-click genre.  And what better way to follow-up on the success of their genre-defining game then with the release of a new series based on Bill Willingham’s comic book Fables.

Imagine if all the story book characters you grew up reading about were forced out of their homes and decided to take up residence in New York City in their own little section called “Fabletown”.  To fit in, some of the creature-like characters used a spell called “Glamor” which changes them to take on  human-like disguises.  The ones that don’t fit in, get sent to “The Farm” in upstate New York.

In this, you play the role of Sheriff Bigby Wolf (aka. The Big Bad Wolf).  You have reformed your ways of the past and now stand for law and order in Fabletown.  When something bad goes down in Fabletown, he’s the one you call.  Bigby is joined by a great cast of characters that completely changes your perspective on them.  An example of this is at one point, you run into one of the three little pigs.  This little piggy loves to drink alcohol and is still holding a grudge against Bigby for blowing his house down.  It’s amazing how many different storybook heroes and villains have been included and I’m hoping for even more in the next episodes.

This episode of the game starts out with Bigby getting a call from Mr. Toad about a ruckus going on in an upstairs apartment.  Bigby goes to check it out and finds the Woodsman beating on a woman.  You decide to put a stop to this and everything seems to be fine after wards.  That is until there is a murder victim found on your door step.  At this point you now team up with Snow White and begin doing your share of detective work to search for who did it.

The art style and game play is practically copied and pasted from “the Walking Dead”.  Instead of trying to survive the zombie apocalypse your trying to solve a murder mystery.  Just like in “The Walking Dead” it works perfectly.  You have quick decision making that will change and tailor the story the way you see fit.  This adds replay value, by going back and doing things a different way just to see the different outcomes.  The only problem with this game is that it does suffer from some minor frame rate issues but it’s nothing that hinders the game play.

The controls and gameplay also borrow from The Walking Dead.  You will move around and “point and click” on objects to interact with them.  An magnify glass will look at objects where as a hand will interact with objects.  The Wolf Among Us also borrows from the QuickTime Events that were introduced in previous TellTale Games.

The first episode ends in a cliffhanger and makes me wish that Tell Tale would just release all the episodes at one time.  I can’t wait to continue my adventures as Bigby and neither should you, purchase the first episode for only $4.99 or get all five by buying the season pass for only $19.99.  Either way be prepared for a howling good time.

I would like to say that I came out of the womb with a controller in hand, but it wasn't until the age of 3 that I would receive my first console, the Atari 2600. From that moment on, games have not only a hobby of mine but a passion as well. Owning the majority of gaming platforms out there, I try to play as many different types of games that I can.
