Chess is a thinking mans game with every move either helping or setting you up for failure.  VooFoo Studios and Ripstone have collaborated to bring the age old puzzle/strategy game of Chess to Nintendo’s eShop and also keeping intact one of the most important features: Multiplayer.

Pure Chess Wii U (7)

The Multiplayer aspect of Pure Chess for the Nintendo consoles is definitely a first for any multiplayer game with the fact that it is not only cross platform with the Wii U and the 3DS, but it also is cross-platform with Apple and Android devices.  This makes it quick and simple to find an opponent.  The leaderboards are also fun for any player that is good enough and wants to challenge the top players in the world.

If you don’t have an internet connection do not fret, there are still other great single player modes that will keep you busy for hours, along with local multiplayer.  There are chess challenges and walk through tutorials for beginners, which I highly recommend if you haven’t played in a while or have never played.  I breezed through the tutorials being the Chess Club nerd that I am but still found it helpful for my matches online.

The game is controlled on the Wii U touch screen, just like its 3DS counterpart, while you will see the pieces move on the top screen with a visually stunning 3D look.  I had to include images of the pieces on the screen to let everyone see how gorgeous the game looks.  I like using the touch screen to control the movements of the pieces as it feels natural.  It also shows you where your piece can move with blinking boxes, which is also extremely helpful for beginners. The soundtrack is what is, atmospheric and fitting for a chess game isn’t anything too memorable.

Pure Chess Wii U (5)

At launch there is also DLC available for the game, which has different pieces and environments, but I feel that it should have been unlockables and not cost money as it doesn’t feel like it makes the game new or fresh.

The Recommendation

If you ware a fan of Chess or have never played chess and want to learn, this is a no brainer, pick this game up.  With great tutorials, cross-platform online play and fun challenges, you will be a chess pro in no time.  The cross-platform play makes it easy to find online games and the visuals are stunning.  A great addition to the eshop and anyone’s digital library.
