I’ve been waiting to play this game for quite sometime now since it was announced for PS4, finally it has arrived!  With a price point of $14.99 I was “on board” for some insanely comical octopus flailing fun.  The game originally released on PC earlier this year and I held off to wait for the console version and I feel it was worth it, especially with some of the added new features.  Young Horses decided to add Playstation Move compatibility to enhance the gameplay if desired, along with a new interesting twist to a coop mode.

You are Octodad, a not-so-typical husband and father just trying to live a normal human life with a little complication….you know..being an octopus and all.  The tasks given to you add a lot of hilarity and frustration all while attempting to not get noticed as being “different” from everyone around.  From pulling weeds to flipping burgers to grocery shopping you find yourself trying to be as careful and graceful as possible, realizing its near impossible.  The new included coop mode can be for up to 4 players, each with their own controller navigating their own limbs.  You can imagine how much communication would be involved to successfully complete tasks with each person controlling one limb a piece.  To make things more interesting you can turn on the “roulette” mode, which will randomize which limb you control after you complete a task.octodad_12

At first I absolutely hated the controls and felt this game was terribly designed, until I sat back and looked at what this game was trying to deliver.  Octodad: Dadliest Catch was supposed to be a difficult to control game from the start, only to add the funny antics that you soon find yourself laughing at getting stuck on stuff or accidentally knocking over the bookshelf in your living room and hearing your wife utter “Not again honey”.  This game may have simple visuals, but it is vibrant with color variations and the physics are what makes this game for what its worth.  Only downside I truly had to cope with was this being an extremely short game, just under 2 hours to complete and roughly 3 hours to 100%.

The Recommendation

All in all, Octodad: Dadliest Catch is a great game for some zany fun with a somewhat touching story behind it.  I give a lot of credit where credits due, especially from this game stemming from a group of college university students who created this game and it gathered loads of attention.  Also, if you are a Playstation Plus subscriber you can snag this unique title for a mere $11.99 until April 29th.
