If you are like me, growing up in the 8-bit era of the NES than you will love this game.  Mutant Mudds Deluxe has definitely got some old school style to it from the Mario Bros. likeness, graphics, placement of bad guys all the way down to the secret areas and jumps.  MMD is probably one of the best indie games I have played to date.

1

The story begins with your character Max, playing a video game when all of a sudden the earth is being invaded by mud like aliens.  After the not so in depth cut scene ends, the game will begin with max wearing a jet pack and equipped with a water gun.  The story being pretty quick and to the point was good because there wasn’t any extra cut scenes throughout the game. It was a surprise as you would think they would like them to guide you through to the end.

Every level has a timer with a certain amount of time given depending on how big the levels are.  You’ll need to beat the level before time runs out or be forced to start over.  There are two sides of levels to choose from.  The regular side, in which you can shoot the mud aliens and destroy them or the spooky side, in which you can mostly avoid the ghostly mud like aliens or you can get your hands on a gun with limited ammo to shoot the ghosts and make them disappear for about 2 seconds to get by them without getting hit.

6

The game play is awesome.  It reminds me of the Mario series with the way you have to time your jumps over gaps just right. Even with the jet pack, death is inevitable and you’ll have to retry the jumps over and over.  It can get frustrating sometimes because you feel it is such an easy jump but yet for some reason it’s just not happening.  You can get hit three times before you have to start over.  Shooting the aliens with your water gun makes it a little easier but that is what makes the spooky side much more challenging because you can’t kill the aliens for all but two seconds.

7

The graphics are just like the good ole days of NES style 8-bit, which works great for the game style and play.  The level graphics would adjust to the background and the foreground.  You will go from playing the game and then get to the orange launchpads that will send Max into the background or foreground.  When you are playing, it can get confusing at times because you can see aliens from the back to the foreground, so you could wind up shooting at an alien that isn’t in front of you or you could totally not realize you just ran into an alien that you thought was on another plane.

5

Each level has so called “objectives” which would be beat the level, collect all 100 diamonds, get the water sprite and beat the hidden level.  Each level has 100 diamonds to collect and sometimes they are a pain to gather.  The water sprites basically are the end of the levels.  Collecting the diamonds didn’t feel necessary but in the game there are unlockable upgrades with certain amounts that have been collected.  The hidden levels are sometimes a little more challenging but fortunately for you there aren’t any items to collect through the level so you can concentrate on just beating the level.

The Recommendation

Gamer’s from the 80’s and/or true gamer’s will have a lot of respect for Mutant Mudds Deluxe.  It has all the elements that made video games from the past so amazing.  This is definitely one of the best indie games I have played to date.  If you love indie games or support them then add this to your collection.  If you are a true gamer of the 80’s then show your respect and get this game and remember what made you love playing video games to begin with.
