Puzzle games at their core are at the heart of many great franchises.  What would Zelda be with out the puzzles to solve in the dungeons?  What would Telltale Games’ point and click adventures be with out those brain teasing moments? Jordan Schuetz and Ninja Pig Studios brings us a challenging brain testing game called IQ Test that will put your mind to the limit.

IQ-Test1

In IQ Test you will not go on an adventure and there is not a narrative.  This is all about testing your wits.  The game starts off with a couple warm up puzzles but then throws you straight to the wolves with some great brain teasing puzzles.  Then it all starts to go downhill as you encounter puzzles with little to no explanation and every time you fail you must start all the puzzles over again from the beginning.  Yeah you heard me correct, the beginning!  Now I understand that the design of the game is to test you, but checkpoints every 5 puzzles would make the game much more bearable and there could still be a rating system at the end for how many times you failed.  These are just minor complaints and I wouldn’t say ruin the game, but I got frustrated enough from starting over that I moved on to another game and then came back later.

The controls mix and match a combination of using using the touch screen to tap on different areas or things in order, to using the buttons on the GamePad to figure out the puzzles.  IQ Test is played completely on the GamePad which is fine because it was a mobile game before it was remade for the Wii U and it makes great use of the controllers features.

Graphically the game accomplishes it’s goals.  It’s not going to blow you out of the water but that’s not the point.  Most of IQ test’s backgrounds are yellow notepads with either text or 2d stickers on it.  The soundtrack has a nice catchy looping song that is fitting of the game and the sound effects will make you chuckle with duck quacks here and there.

The Recommendation

IQ Test isn’t really a test of your IQ, it’s more of a test of your patience.  There is definitely fun to be had, but the lack of checkpoints really keeps the game from excelling in my mind.  If you are a fan of brain teasers though, this is the game for you!  It will keep you busy with clever puzzles and will give you a laugh when letting someone else play and see them fail over and over again.
