The video game industry is a complete copycat industry.  When one company makes a successful game type, you can bet that there will be clones to follow.  While Angry Birds wasn’t the first of it’s kind, it was the most popular.  Angry Birds was a national phenomenon that captured the hearts of people, young and old.  Castle Clout 3D is a similar game but is it different enough to differentiate itself and carve its own legacy in gaming?

Castle Cloud 3D has a loose story line where you have to conquer different lands such as a Forest, Frost, Desert, Jungle, and Burning Lands area to save the land from darkness.  There are 150 levels to play through so there is definitely some replay-ability built into the title when trying to earn all the gold cups.  The menus and gameplay feel like they are straight from a mobile game which some might consider good and some might consider bad.  I don’t mind the mobile feel of the high scoring and either replaying or moving on to the next level.

The gameplay follows your basic Angry Birds formula but adds more real world elements to it such as ballistas, catapults and more.  There are also environmental elements such as exploding barrels that will destroy a bigger radius then the normal rock or arrow that you will shoot towards your opponents castle.  You earn different cups depending on how many shots it takes you to clear a level.  There is also a multiplayer mode where you can take on local players either in download play or computer controlled enemies in direct competition to see who can destroy each others castle first.  This is a nice variance in gameplay from the campaign mode.  It feels similar but with competition you feel more of a challenge to rush to destroy their castle.

Graphically the game is in 2D and goes for a more realistic approach then cartoony look.  It works but it isn’t the cream of the crop of the 3DS.  Musically the game fits the part with music you would expect for the time period.  The sound effects also fit the game well.

Castle Clout 3D never veers too far of the beaten path, but that’s not entirely a bad thing.  If you like quick arcade action that plays similar to the Angry Bird franchise, I recommend this game to you. It’s a quick pick up and play  game for a decent price. You wont find much much better on the eShop in this genre.  I feel it’s different enough within the genre that it is worth it.
