Free To Play Friday – Wanderment

When I was much younger, I had a blind cat.  He was fascinating to watch – even though he was totally blind, he could trek around the house near-flawlessly; zip up and down stairs, navigate the kitchen, avoid our two gigantic dogs.  I could never understand how he did it, but it was amazing to see it happen.

This week’s FTPF is another Game Jam game, Wanderment.  In it, you are a blind cat trying to find your way to a house to play with your friend.  Sit perfectly still, and there will be very little to guide you.  But move, hop, and splash through fountains and distances will open up.  Ambient outdoor audio clues help as well, painting a picture of where you are in this world.

The shortness of the development time here belies the depth of the visuals and audio in crafting this thoughtful game.  It’s so well-made that even with just glowing dots, you can effectively move through this environment.  Turn your sound up.  I took a few screenshots, but static images don’t do it justice – play the game with the volume on to see and hear it in action.

Wanderment can be played here.
