According to various places around the web Microsoft is thinking about doing away with Xbox 360’s old Microsoft Points system. Remember when we wrote about Microsoft accidentally publishing a few items with a real money system on Xbox live?
Well, people over at the Verge are reporting that the lastest pre-release build of Windows 8 will allow real money purchses in the Xbox Video store and suggests that it will trickle down into the Xbox 360 consoles via the next Dashboard update, slated for October 26th.
Does shifting away with points make sense? I personally think so. Their new recent unveiling of the MyAchievements program however seems to undermine this news. Would it make sense to give us rebates on a point system they are doing away with? Or will it simply be converted to money?
These are the questions we are asking ourselves. In all honesty I think that most users find the points system confusing and would like to see it removed and turned into currency. It would make sense if users could understand their value easier, especially parents. One particular sore spot is points rarely stay evenly spent. You are always having to get odd multiples that don’t balance out based on purchase points. This is extremely frustrating as you are left over with money unspent and to use it, you have to spend more money. It just leads to a bad user experience and makes people hold a certain sense of animosity towards Microsoft for keeping such a rigid system.
You’ve most likely noticed my stand on this whole topic, I want to turn it over to the readers. Do you agree with the reasoning above, and can you think of anything to add? Let us know below in the comments.
