Puzzle games work on handhelds better then any other kind of video game device. The hugely popular puzzle game “Tetris” drove the sales of Nintendo’s handheld Game Boy. Even today Candy Crush is widely popular amongst iOS and android users. Word Wizard 3D is the latest puzzle game from Enjoy Gaming Ltd and unfortunately isn’t as good as the two aforementioned games, but could be a good educational alternative for a younger child.
There are various types of word games available to play in this title. In “Pickletter”, the game will place random letters on the top screen and you will have to tap a square on the touch screen to try to create words in the blocks horizontally. In “Hidden Words” it is your classic game “Word Search” just with a new name. “Alphadoku” is a twist on Sudoku, where you use letters instead of numbers. It really doesn’t feel the same with letters instead of numbers. “Swap Letters” lets you move around letters until you form a word, if it’s green it is in the right spot and if it’s red it isn’t. Simple. There are also “Hangman”, “Wordfinder” and other generic word games available on within the game.
All the games work fine and are educational, but the clear disregard for graphics (And I’m not a graphics guy buy ANY means) is sad to see in this day and age. Even most iOS games I play nowadays have a HD polish to them. Make no mistake, this game could have easily been made for the SNES. The cheerful, monotonous music gets old after about 5 minutes and isn’t very memorable.
Let me make this clear, I’m not bashing the game as a whole. There is educational value in this title and some of the modes are challenging which makes it fun. It just feels like it was rushed together with clear lack of polish or the Nintendo TLC that gamers have grown accustom to on the 3DS. I’d only recommend this title for a child that you want to have an educational experience sprinkled in with the rest of their gaming.
