I wasn’t sure what to expect when I turned Velocity 2X by Futurlab on the Playstation 4.  I have never played the previous games but I did see that they were reviewed with some pretty good scores.  After I seen the scores, I thought it was gonna be just a simple game and at first I really believed I was right.  The story begins with the characters all being blacked out because we haven’t met them or learned their names yet.  As the story continues and you begin to meet these characters then their avatars will show up next to their boxed conversations.

Triple Shot

Velocity 2X starts out with you flying a ship to which you do nothing but drive up, down, left and right.  After completing more and more levels you will begin to unlock more weaponry and additional moves.  Eventually, you will be able to shoot, teleport and other things.  The cool part of the game is that you will fly your ship from an above view and also play some of the game in 2D side scrolling as well.Velocity 2X begins real slow to which you are basically running and jumping, while collecting crystals and flying around and saving floating survivor and collecting the codex.  Basically, collecting crystals, survivors, and codex will help you on your overall score at the end of each level.  Finishing each level in a certain time frame will also help improve your overall level score and rank.

While flying around, you will unlock your ability to teleport, which is a bit helpful in saving more survivors and moving on because there are barriers that will block your path.  Also, Futurlab decided to throw some curveballs to the game because while flying, there are some numbered obstacles that need to be destroyed in order.  Well, some of them obstacles are just in your path as you fly but some of them have been put into the side scrolling missions to where you will have to leave the ship.  For instance, you will blow up obstacles 1 and 2 but then there will be a 4 or 5 next and an A.  You will land in the loading dock A and the game will be take over as a side scroller and your character will run and collect crystals and kill the bad guys all while keeping an eye on the numbered obstacles to be able to move on in your ship.  While playing the 2D side scrolling missions, you will start off by just running and jumping but then you will need to teleport, shoot traps, bad guys, and avoid lava like ground obstacles.

Boom boom Sheikh shakes the bloom

The controls of the game are confusing at first but after unlocking all your move sets and learn them then the controls make a lot more sense and feel comfortable.  While flying, you can speed up the ship to go faster by pulling the right trigger, teleport with the square buttong, shoot with the right stick and etc.  The side scroller missions you can run by pulling the right trigger, slide pressing x, shoot with the right stick and etc.  The one thing I felt that could add to the controller itself is the vibration when hit by anything, I feel like with all that goes into these games and controls that it kind of takes away without it.

The graphics are nothing super impressive but at the same time it is completely flawless.  I have reached points that are full of bad guys and bullets and other things on the screen and it didn’t slow down at all or glitch or anything bad whatsoever.  The music goes good with it at first but then as you play you will eventually notice it sounds like it is only on repeat so you constantly hear the same song over and over and over and it begins to kind of get annoying.  Like I mentioned, the game starts off real slow but eventually you will unlock more things which will lead to more of a challenge.  The bad guys just kind of float around, some turrets in the game that shoot at you and then eventually health packs become available to start collecting to help you survive.  To me the game seems fun and has a great twist with it but it feels a little easy in my opinion, with the exception of the boss battles.  If you want a challenge at gaming, then these boss battles are what you are looking for.  They get shields, turrets that surround them, and random ships that come around and try to kill you all while he is protected.  It is inevitable, during these battles,  lives will be lost.

The Recommendation

I love the graphics and the game play.  I am a little disappointed with the music and the fact that I have to read the cut scenes which are basic comic book style boxes next to the characters.  I think Velocity 2X is slow to start but once it gets going, it challenges you pretty well and before you know it, you can’t stop playing.  I got frustrated a little bit with the boss battles but at the same time it made everything else good and bad worth it.  The boss battles are probably some of the hardest I have played in a long long time.  I would definitely say Velocity 2X is a game needed in any gamers collection.  Get it and enjoy the fun variations to beating the game.
