“Get to the choppa” and get ready for one of the toughest battles in your gaming career.  This epic battle has bullets and rockets flying everywhere, it is like a war zone on top of a war zone.  The controls get hectic, the game play is difficult, and the overall product is a mixed feeling of good and bad.  Originally released in 2006 on the Sega Dreamcast, Under Defeat HD has potential but plenty of room for improvement.

Under Defeat HD is a port but now with the HD quality, the graphics look fantastic.  The Bullets and missiles take over the screen with all the surrounding enemy tanks and ships, landscape and the ocean which looks great all around but it has an occasional dip in frame rate because of all the awesomeness.  I didn’t really mind it too much but when it was a big battle, I could tell it was starting to annoy me a little near the end.  I love all the detail to the enemy ships and the landscapes, they look pretty realistic.  The music is awesome as well adding to the gameplay, after each level you feel like you accomplished something, which you should feel, and during the game it made me feel like I was in an 80’s action war movie.

This Deluxe Edition has 2 game modes, one being new order mode and the other being arcade mode.  Arcade mode is just like the classic arcade feeling where the borders take up most of the screen on both sides of the game.  The New Order mode is a widescreen version of the game.  No borders and the level has a little more ground added to the game, so there is a little more room to fly around in.  The controls can get a little tricky at times.  I feel like they did the controls just right with the bullets and bombs by making a hold and shoot button and a simple tap for the bombs.  The bombs will take up the whole screen and knock most of the enemies out or severely damage them.  You only have so many bombs though, so use them wisely.  Also, if you don’t shoot your bullets and let your meter bar fill up and then shoot, you will gain a helper bot that can shoot bullets, cannons and missiles to help you out.

Under Defeat HD: Deluxe Edition is a pretty challenging game.  Basically one missile and you are dead, kind of like real life. The boss battles are pretty tough but sometimes I feel like the path to get to the boss can be tougher which makes it harder to save some of them very helpful bombs.  The game can occasionally get frustrating with how easy it is to die.  I feel like they could have given a health bar and have it set to where your chopper had a little more resistance to enemy bullets.  The game is pretty fast paced and has a lot going on around your helicopter but it works great.

The Recommendation

I like that this title has a lot of challenge to it and had me replaying it over and over again because it made me feel like my gaming skills were lacking. So high replay value is a bonus. It is a very difficult game between the masses of enemy fire to the lacking handle of the choppers flight control but it is really fun.  I would say if you are into overhead shoot em’ up chopper games then get this, I highly recommend it, especially if you’re up for a challenge.  While the game is worth having and is very fun I don’t believe the price point is accurate for what you get at $29.99.  For that price, you could own a next gen game that is not a port. With that said it’s worth checking out and if you are short on cash and it goes on sale it should be a definite buy.
