PLATFORM(S): Nintendo Wii U
GENRE(S): First Person
RELEASE DATE(S): July 10th, 2014
When I first saw The Letter, I was intrigued because it’s not the normal 2D indie title I’m use to seeing. Even though the graphics look more N64 than Gamecube, it still looked like a nice genre and style change from the indies I normally play. For the price tag of 2 dollars I was wondering how the game would control and the amount of content we would be getting.
The Letter starts you out in a dark and lonely room. Armed with just your flashlight, you begin searching for a letter. Once you find the first letter you find out that your father is missing and you set out on your adventure to search for clues to his disappearance.
The controls are like your standard first-person affair. Thankfully, the right-stick is inverted by default, because there is no way to change this. The A button is used for interactive purposes and you can jump and turn off your flashlight as well (even though there is no point as almost every area is dark and there is no battery life to your flashlight anyways. There are no enemies in the game and you will just have to search for clues to progress the story. Unfortunately, the game can be completed within 10 to 15 minutes and there is nothing really there to keep you coming back.
Graphically, the game has a polished HD look, but the models look pretty bad and the textures are bland. The atmosphere definitely feels great though. It is creepy and the lighting looks pretty good. The soundtrack sets the creepy mood up even more and adds to the experience.
The Recommendation
For $2, it’s hard to not recommend the game, but being that it can be beaten in 10 to 15 minutes, you might want to be hesitant. There are suppose to be future updates for the title (hopefully more content ) but I don’t know when that is coming. The game is definitely atmospheric, but the shortness in length and the generic story are shortcomings to the title and hopefully a void that extra content will fill.
