Everyone’s favorite con artist and company man are back in the second episode of Telltale Games’ journey into the Borderlands universe.  After an extra long wait between the first and second chapter of the saga we pick up where we left off at the end, with Rhys and Fiona embellishing their paths to end up captured by a bounty hunter.

(The review below may contain light story spoilers, though attempts were made to keep details as vague as possible.)

The four of the unlikely heroes start the second episode in the bottom of the battle area in which they beat Bossanova with a little help from Zero.  There is a pretty entertaining scene feature Fiona needing to extract a certain body part from an incapacitated soldier in order to open a security lock.  Also we get a heavy dose of a budding relationship between Handsome Jack’s hologram and Rhys in this chapter.  The end of this introduction part ends with a really awesome Quick Time driven escape sequence in the car where the guys eventually get split up from the girls.

From here you can choose to start the path as the gals or the guys.  Fiona and Sasha head to one of Fenix’s old hideouts while Rhys and Vaughn are met by an old foe.  Eventually after another really cool chase scene in which Fiona and Sasha are trying o escape a couple bounty hunters and Athena every one meets up at Scooter’s place to move on out.  The only place in this episode where your money mechanic is used is at the garage.

Once you all head out you make your way to Old Haven which seems to be abandoned.  Using your eye technology as Rhys you are able to get the power back on and find a hidden Atlas base.  Here the super short, 45 minute episode comes to a close with an excellent cliffhanger that will have you wondering where they are going to go from here.  Let’s just pray that it doesn’t take another 4 months.

The graphics and the sound are top notch just like the previous episode.  Unfortunately, the title still suffers from the same frame rate hiccups that it did in the first episode.  I really enjoyed the song during the first chase scene.  It reminded me of the beginning of the first Borderlands game, which really set up the series to be as popular as it is.

The Recommendation

If you are playing the Atlas Mugged episode for pure story value (and why wouldn’t you be?) then you will be highly entertained and left feeling content with your 45 minutes of gameplay.  I felt the experience was a little shallow especially after a 4 month hiatus compared to the first episode.  Let’s hope episode 3 comes sooner then later and that Telltale can deliver a more balanced experience.
