Who remembers the good ole days playing timeless classics such as Star Fox or Rogue Squadron and loving the hell out of them?  I definitely do and I know Strike Suit Zero  might not fill that aching void for a new and fun space shooter, but it does a decent job standing up next to space shooting legends.  Strike Suit Zero was originally released on PC with a later piece of downloadable content released known as Heroes Of The Fleet, which is included in the PS4 director’s cut version and adds more to the strategic shooting madness.

The story is typical as expected,  with a rebellion force trying to eradicate Earth as you try to stop the war on quite possibly the last few moments Earth may actually exist.  Admittedly, the game has an extremely slow start and was quite possibly unappealing at first with close to no action and an emotionless story intro.  One of the welcome additions to this Director’s Cut version is being able to obtain the new “Strike Suit” ship earlier in the game unlike the PC version. This new combat ship transforms into an overpowered mech and opens new doors to destroying enemy ships, making the combat a much more enjoyable experience.

Strike Suit Zero controls really well on the PS4 and makes navigating these 3-dimensional open space battlegrounds fairly less frustrating than most space shooters.  There are a few framerate drops when a lot is going on at the same time, be it explosions, tons of lasers, missiles or ships flooding the screen at once.  The graphics, even though improved from the PC version are quite undefined when it comes to the actual 3d models of the ships and debris, but the atmosphere and background all around you look quite inviting and great in color the farther along in the story you progress.  When the dogfights commence and the lasers and explosions ensue, your TV screen lights up with colors and effects that steer you away from noticing the bland ship visuals, which is the real reason you are playing anyways.  Later on in the game you get much more difficult missions and learning to maneuver quickly is a must or you will be destroyed rather quickly.

The Recommendation

Let’s be honest, it is a different mind set with this game and possibly a well deserved break from the typical shooters that flood our console libraries of today.  Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut is a great old school style space shooter with a slight change, being the Strike Suit being able to transform into a mech that is a beast once activated on the space battlefield.  Even though the game has its repetitive tasks in mission, it still is a space shooter which is welcome since that genre seems to be on the brink of extinction as of late.
