The summer of RCMADIAX continues on the Nintendo Wii U eShop with his latest release Spikey Walls.  This is quite a departure from his previous two games, both of which were tabletop games.  Spikey Walls does come with a lot of controversy attached to it, with twitter wars reaching new heights after it’s announcement.

Spikey Walls in simple terms is a clone of the smartphone success story “Flappy Birds”.  The biggest difference between Spikey Walls and Flappy Birds is that RCMADIAX didn’t reuse assets from Super Mario Bros. and instead made an original character and background design.  The concept is to get the highest score by passing through “spikey walls”.  I did notice that the hit detection was off sometimes slightly, but not too bad. Tapping the A button will make your character (He is unnamed but I still call him Buzz Buzz) flap up.  The game play mechanic is similar to the rocket barrel levels from Retro Studios Donkey Kong Country games.  The game  is meant to be played in short sittings and the MiiVerse integration to post your high scores adds replay value to the title.

The graphics are nothing special but they serve their purpose.  I wouldn’t have minded some change up in scenery or backgrounds to help with the monotony of the levels, but this is just a minor complaint.  The loops that RCMADIAX gets for their soundtracks are always catchy and Spikey Walls is no different then his previous offerings.  You will catch yourself humming this tune which flapping away.

The Recommendation

In his successful attempt to troll the internet, RCMADIAX still succeeds in making a fun and playable flappy birds clone with Spikey Walls.  It doesn’t introduce anything new or special to the genre, but for $.99 it is a great way to waste time and challenge fellow miiversers in a battle to earn the highest score possible.
