Sonic the hedgehog games are really hit or miss in my opinion.  There has been some Sonic games that have been phenomenal and there has been some that are just okay or probably shouldn’t have been made.  Sonic Lost World, I believe, is a hit.  It meshes a lot of the sonic you know from the past with a new school attitude.  The very first level, which was also the downloadable demo, gave me lots of hope for the rest of the game.  There are multiple paths to take to finish the level and with it being a 3D level that will also have you searching up and down for the hidden red star rings.  The story revolves around you teaming up with Dr. Robotnik (Dr. Eggman) to take on the deadly six and stop them from siphoning the energy from the world.

Sonic Lost World changes up the gameplay from playing on side scrolling 2D levels to 3D levels to spherical levels that remind me a lot of the Super Mario Galaxy series.  Sonic’s speed can be controlled this time around.  By moving the left stick around you can move Sonic at a normal pace but holding down the right trigger button will put sonic in to high speed run.  While running, obviously he will be faster than without holding the trigger button but he will also be able to do additional attacks as well.  Running will allow him to run up and along some walls, jumping small ledges, in the air he can perform double jump moves, a homing attack to where he zeros in on his target or multiple targets and takes them out.  Sonic comes with a new kick attack in Lost World which will help him take on bigger and badder enemies and knock other baddies into each other.

Special attacks that are returning from Sonic Colors, called wisp abilities, include the Drill, laser, and rocket.  The new special moves are Eagle, Asteroid and Rhythm.  The Eagle wisp ability allows sonic to fly through the air.  The Asteroid special ability allows you to reduce objects in to tiny atom like particles.  The Rhythm ability lets Sonic get around on paths of notes.  As previously stated, the red star rings are hidden around the levels and once you collect them in each level, they’ll open up circus like bonus levels.  ***Spoiler Alert***  If you collect all the red star rings in the game, you will be able to unlock the always awesome Super Sonic.  Just like all other sonic games, you will also be able to free locked up animals and defeat baddies to free more animals too.

The story starts off as Sonic and Tails are in pursuit of Dr. Eggman who has captured a lot of their animal friends to help power up his robotic army.  A capsule full of the animals falls out of Dr. Eggman’s ship and Tails tries to maneuver down to retrieve but is shot down.  As Sonic and Tails crash land, they realize they are on a lost world called The Lost Hex.  The duo make their way through the world to find out that Dr. Eggman has a magical conch that enforces the help of a villainous group known as the deadly six.  However, when Sonic kicks the conch away, the Deadly Six rebel against Dr. Eggman and take control of his Badnik army. They begin to use one of the machines to siphon energy from Sonic’s world below, planning to drain all of its life force until there is nothing left and use it to power themselves.  Sonic has to agree to work with Dr. Eggman, needing his help to stop the machine, though this starts to cause trust issues between him and Tails.

Sonic Lost World was pretty fun for the most part with quite a few ways to defeat the levels.  Some of the 3d levels or sphere levels could get pretty difficult if you were not paying attention to some of the details in the level.  There were parts that would bring you back a little and have to keep retrying til you could find the correct path.  I am in love with the graphics for the most part, the levels run pretty smooth but I did have one troubling level.  In the level there were multiple baddies and the slow down rate was ridiculous, almost as if the refresh rate was way off.  The music is just like all other sonic games with some of them being remixed.  If you listen carefully, you can hear the music of previous Sonic games but with more up beat tempo or techno-ish remix.  Same with some of the levels as well, they are just like past games levels but with fun additions.

The gameplay is pretty good but the controls are not like your usual Sonic games.  Holding the trigger down will make you run faster but it will also give you different options on defeating the villains.  The game responds to the controls very quickly which is definitely good being that it is a very fast paced game at times.  The main villain fights are nothing more special than past games as well though even if they are just a tad more difficult.  The routine they use is pretty quick and easy to figure out but it is still a lot better than previous games.  I like the added attack moves because it gives the game a little more of a game of skill rather than just a run through it and be done.

The Recommendation

I have always liked Sonic games because they were fun and this one definitely holds up to the name better than before.  If you loved the Mario Galaxy series then you will most likely enjoy this game as well, maybe not as much but you will appreciate how they incorporated that game play into this.  The graphics and refresh rate were very good except for my one hiccup but looking past that could be tolerable I would think.  The music is great how they reused oldies and made them up to date and more enjoyable but also memorable from the past.  I would say Sonic Lost World is definitely worth a buy but I wouldn’t pay more than $30.  Kids will love it and parents/gamers of older will love the reminiscence of how they incorporated the old with the new to make a fun new experience.
