Going to school in the 80’s, there was a game called Odell Lake, if you remember that game then Plenty of Fishies will bring back many memories except with better graphics.  Unfortunately, I am no longer a child into games like this but I did catch myself losing track of time because of it.  Plenty of Fishies is definitely made for kids and quite possibly the adults that wanna reminisce of a game that is similar to our childhood.

The game is easy to play because all there is to do is move the analog stick or d-pad and use the A button to speed up and swim up to the smaller fish and eat them.  Plenty of Fishies has a few modes to check out as well.  There are 3 game modes to choose from starting with adventure mode, flippy fish, and egg survivor.  In adventure mode, you will start off as a baby clownfish and eat the smaller fish to grow to a bigger fish.  The levels also have goals to do before you can finish such as get big enough to eat the barracuda or eat every kind of fish.  The levels also have bonus points to earn by finishing as fast as possible but the bonus points are somewhat difficult to achieve.  The points start at about 20,000 points and winds down as time progresses but it dwindles pretty quickly but sometimes there aren’t enough fish that come around fast enough to earn the bonus.  Each fish you eat is worth points, the bigger the fish the more points it is worth.  Every point earned adds up to earn extra lives.  If a bigger fish does bite you then it will take away your lives but you will continue in the game until all your lives are gone.

Flippy fish mode is a rip off of flappy bird and extremely difficult to do.  The obstacles are really close together to where there is no room to float above or below them.  Egg survivor mode is just as it sounds, protect your eggs.  The round starts with 6 eggs lined up behind your clownfish and it is your job to keep them safe.  As the level begins, you must swim away from the swarms of other fish coming after your eggs.  The eggs are lined up behind your fish in a row and the follow you as you swim from the other hungry fish.  The other fish come hard and fast for those eggs and the slightest wrong turn will get the eggs eaten fairly quickly.

The music of the game is amazing, it repeats itself but it truly makes you feel like you are really in the depths of the ocean.  The graphics of the game are very good with some of the levels looking phenomenal.  Unfortunately for all the visual beauty and entrancing music they fell short on keeping up with the refresh rates.  The levels glitch a lot throughout the game and make it very frustrating.  The game freezes and then it gets going again every few minutes and it gets annoying and aggravating.  The positive part is that the problem is being addressed with the first patch coming out.  I also had one play through that I had the game show an error message and reloaded back to the main menu.

The Recommendation

Plenty of Fishies is definitely a children’s game and has a lot of similarities to Odell Lake.  I would suggest this game even with the glitches because there is a patch coming out very soon to address the issue.  Once the game gets patched up then I would definitely suggest this game for younger children.  The graphics and music are great and the game plays well.  The egg survivor and flippy fish modes are very challenging and add to the frustration levels.  With that aggravation though it only makes me want to play more and do better.  It does get to be repetitive and boring after a bit but you will lose track of time at some point if allow yourself to get into the game.  Even if you are hardcore gamer and you have kids then I would say get this for them.
