LEGO City Undercover is a G rated version of the Grand Theft Auto series but in an awesome way.  Take control of detective Chase McCain to try and catch the diabolical bad guys.  Build some crazy things to get you through missions and some hilarious dialogue with lots of movie, tv, and video game references.  Unlock all the vehicles from Aircrafts and boats to railway vehicles and roadway vehicles as well as multiple characters.  Just like most games there are some bad things that come along with this game as well as the awesome parts.

Chase Dino

The story starts with Chase McCain returning to LEGO city after he accidentally reveals Natalia’s identity live on national television thus putting her life at risk again against the bad man Rex Fury.  Mayor Gleeson has Chase investigate a spree of crimes that she believes Rex Fury is behind.  The game is pretty fun to play through the missions while looking from clues to bring Rex to justice.  The story is pretty funny with dialogues from popular tv shows, movies and video games that I am sure most gamers will understand and movie buffs will love.  The side missions can be fun but can get pretty time consuming at times and have nothing to do with the story line.  The side missions could range from putting out fires, rescue cats, outrun the cops with stolen cars and even catching aliens from outer space.

LEGO games usually have a lot to offer in vehicles to build and unlock but this one takes the cake with over 100 different autos.  The vehicles consist of aircrafts such as airplanes, helicopters and even UFO’s.  Some aircrafts you can jump out of and land on top of buildings, almost like a faster way to abort the flying craft and get to where you are going faster.  Other vehicles included are bikes, emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and police cars, worker vehicles such as dump trucks and taxi cabs, railway vehicles such as trains and hand carts, boats and cars that are made for speed or performance or for heavy duty destruction.

Just like every other LEGO game ever made, you will collect studs, red bricks and gold bricks along with unlockable character icons.  The studs work as money, the red bricks are unlockable cheats like stud multipliers and others, and the gold bricks unlock nothing this time around, it just helps you get closer to the 100% completion.  There’s also circular pictures of characters floating around the levels that can be collected to unlock the characters.  All these collectibles are similar to all previous LEGO games before this but this one has a new collectible.  There are blocks that are collectible that enable you to build structures that require a certain amount of building blocks.  They can be collected by destroying things in the level that will give you a little at a time or you can find and collect glowing big bricks that are worth more by a significant amount to the normal small ones.

The negative things about this game are very few but the one major one is the loading times.  The loading times come with just a boring white bar that fills in as its loading which makes it seem like its loading even longer than it really is.  Not only is the loading time long, it happens quite often.  All previous games had the option for co-op play but you guessed it.  There is no option for co-op play available in this game which kinda sucks and kinda pointless being that there is a character named Frank Honey that is like your side kick from the beginning.  Also, most games have the off tv option on the Wii U gamepad to play but this game doesn’t have this either.  I am not really too annoyed with this but I am sure there are people that like this option for multiple reasons.  The positive with the game is that the game pad is used for a wide variety of things.  From picking which vehicle you want to use to picking your wardrobe for quick changing disguises.  Also, like in arkham asylum or zombie u, you can use the game pad to search for evidence at crime scenes which is definitely cool being that it gets you into the game in a physical manner as well.

I have loved LEGO games from the beginning and this one is no different.  I love this game more than past games but it does suck that there is no co-op being that I like to take these games on with my son.  I truly enjoyed the storylines being that they had a lot of movie and tv show rip offs and were hysterically funny.  I enjoyed the playing the story because it was constant but the side missions are a little different.  The side missions felt like it took too much time and effort.  LCU is definitely worth the buy if you liked the previous LEGO games or are into huge open world as long as you don’t mind slow loading times.  It is a must buy especially being that there aren’t too many Wii U games that are must have’s in your collection as of right now.  So go buy it and enjoy.
