All shapes, colors and sizes are coming at you in an all out attack.  From rotating triangles to black hole like circles, these shapes will bounce around aimlessly or they will come at you like a spider monkey!  There really is no story to this game, just shoot em up and survive.  It may seem super simple at first but once a few seconds goes by it gets incredibly insane on the screen to the point where you can’t move and you will blow up and die.  The game is extremely challenging so be prepared to put some time into it or you will get annoyed or bored with it and move on to the next interest.

The graphics are pretty simple but yet amazing.  The screen gets insanely filled with bad guys and it still runs smooth.  The 3D type effects are pretty cool too, they changed up the levels to not look the same and add different elements to the experience.  Instead of just a box and all the shapes come at you within it, they made a round level where you will go around and blow up the shapes.  There’s a few levels that get warped and look like they are back and forth.  If you have played the previous two installments than you will love the level setups.  The sound is pretty simple with just the shooting effects and blowing up when you are destroyed.  The music is techno that plays throughout, which I am not a fan of but it goes very well with the game.

The gameplay of the game is not that complicated but don’t take that as it being easy because it is far from it.  The game controls are very simple with using only both analog sticks and both trigger buttons.  The controls are no different from the past but why bother changing something that’s not broken.  The left analog moves, the right analog shoots, the left trigger drops mines and the right trigger lets off a bomb that’ll clear the mayhem on the screen.

Geometry Wars 3 is all out crazy, insane and completely challenging.  The game has 4 game modes which consist of adventure mode, classic mode, bonus levels and online mode.  The classic mode has 5 levels of specific game play.  The 5 levels are called deadline classic, king classic, evolved classic, pacifism classic and waves classic.  In deadline you have to score as many points before time expires.  King is like king of the hill where you have to be in the hill, which is a bubble, to shoot the shapes meanwhile the bubble is shrinking, once out of the bubble you can’t shoot til you are in the next bubble and you only get one life.  Evolved is scoring as many points as possible within the 3 given lives.  Pacifism is where you are given one life and no guns, basically you will go through trigger gates to kill off the surrounding shapes.  Waves is where you are to try and score as many points as possible with only one life.

The adventure mode on the other hand is a lot different than its predecessors.  This mode will have multiple squares within a square shaped field that will have squares that pop upward and change color.  These squares are the levels that make a pathway to the end level.  Each level consists of goals to be beat and each goal is worth a star and each level has 3 stars.  In order to unlock the next level you must earn atleast 1 star.  There are bosses in the game as well that are easy to beat but to reach 3 stars it feels impossible.  Some levels do require a certain amount of stars to be earned before it becomes playable.  The bonus levels are levels that are unlocked as you play throughout the adventure mode.  The online mode is where you will go head to head with other games but unfortunately I was unable to play anyone as there was nobody on there.

Like previously stated, each level has 3 goals and each one is worth a star.  The first star is usually a simple goal but then they get ridiculous.  The game has some extreme goals to reach to be honest, for example, one level the 1st goal is 500,00 points to reach and the next 2 goals are 3,000,000 and 5,000,000 points to reach.  The best way to reach them is to collect the green shards that come out of the exploded shapes.  These shards will add up your multiplier to help reach these crazy goals but they also help you earn rewards and unlockables.  These rewards will also help you on reaching these 3 star goals which is definitely going to be needed.  These perks are unlocked with reaching the boss levels and the green shards that you collect during gameplay will upgrade them.  There are 10 total perks to unlock throughout to help you reach the end and them obnoxious 3 star goals.

The Recommendation

I loved the first two installments of the Geometry Wars games and I will also agree to this one being just as good.  I have only one true gripe and that is the goals for the 2nd and 3rd stars.  They are obviously ridiculous in my opinion if I have not made that clear.  I love how they changed up some of the game to add a little more to it from the perks to the way the level terrains get warped and crazy.  The game is very challenging and it seems relentless on the attack so there is no chance of blinking if you want to survive.  I definitely recommend this game for people who like a real challenge to gaming and it is fun.
