Evofish reminds me of a similar game that I use to play on the Mac when I was in elementary school. Don’t ask me the name because I’m old as hell and have a horrible memory, but it’s main purpose is kill or be killed or survival of the fittest. So in this fish eat fish world, is this game the big fish in the pond?
EvoFish has two main modes of play: Single player and multiplayer. In single player, there isn’t any story so to speak of, you just play as a smaller fish and eat the weaker fish to grow and avoid the bigger fish from harming you. There are power ups such as a turbo, shieldor slow down to break up the game play, but mostly all you will be doing is using the joystick to swim over the weaker enemies. As you evolve and get bigger, you get higher on the food chain and the enemies that once hunted you are now the hunted.
Multiplayer is more of the star of the show. In 4 vs. 1, 4 players will grab wii remotes and go after the player using the gamepad. The Wii U gamepad in multiplayer is awesome because it gives you an extra screen for a fifth player. The point of the game is to survive while the other players try to take you out. The clock is your health in a way and the other 4 don’t have to worry about eating the fodder, their only goal is to bring you down. In a sort of opposite mode, God of the swarm has the GamePad player controlling two fish trying to wreck havoc on the other players. In the third multiplayer mode, Last Man Standing, it is just a mad dash to eat the most fish as possible and that is all.
Graphically, EvoFish looks like a mobile game but blown up on the big screen. It doesn’t lose any resolution though, as it looks just as crisp on a 60″ as it does on the Wii U GamePad. I really enjoy the vibrant colors and bright looks, but it has a very simplistic feel as well. The sound track has a nice feel to it but doesn’t stand out on its own and has nothing that leaves a lasting impression.
The Recommendation
For the asking price of $5 this isn’t a horrible addition to the Wii U library. The single player will only last you a few plays, but as a party game this title has legs. It’s extremely easy to pick up and play and the fact that it is 5 player multiplayer will make a party favorite. If you are stocked full of party games already you may want to steer clear of this one but if you are looking for something to liven up your video game party, look no further.
