Daylight is a first person survival game that begins a little slow.  I was thinking at first it was just a few little scares to get the nerves going and that was it and I wasn’t far off.  I will not say it is gonna be a game changer in horror but it will get a scare out of you at one point in the game.  The game starts with Sarah waking up in an unknown location and an unidentified man’s voice talking to her.  Basically the entire game is of you carrying a cell phone, which is your map, flare and glow sticks.  The light on your cell phone will be on the whole time as your flashlight but you can also use the glow sticks which also help you search for clues.  The flares make them nappy looking witches disappear.  Watch how you use these items though because they are not readily available, you must find them throughout, meanwhile the glow sticks are set at the beginning of each new beginning.

Throughout the game you will be searching for notes and logs on the hospitals past, which the game call remnants.  There are several levels which are the hospital, the prison, the sewer and the forest.  Majority of this game will be in the hospital and prison.    While searching for these remnants, the halls will whisper and creep you out.  The remnants are pretty well written and have a little creepiness to them.  As you progress through the game, you will hear more screams and shadow like figures and it will get your nerves going a little bit.  Just when you think you are getting somewhere, one of them wicked creepy bug eyed witches come out and will get you at least once.  I will say that I did get catch off guard one time for sure, I turned around and boom this witch came right out of the wall with one them sadistic screams and it got me to bounce back in my seat.

The graphics of the game are pretty good but being a dark atmosphere there doesn’t have to be too much detail.  The witches do their job at being creepy and the voice overs are pretty good but the main character Sarah will repeat things sometimes.  The game plays pretty well, I actually had one glitch, where I turned around and the game went side ways and all of a sudden I fell into a deep dark hole without moving, but it never happened again.  The music helps keep the dark corridors feeling eerie.  It gets more up tempo when you are getting closer to the witches or a new find.

The Recommendation

This is the first game on the Unreal Engine 4 and it creates the levels differently every time you start a new game which helps add to the replay value.  The replay value would be better though if the game didn’t slow down.  Unfortunately the entire game lasts about three hours and comes up short in the story department.  Looking around dark halls constantly searching for the remnants and rarely seeing witches make it a tense game without too much of a fear factor but don’t think it won’t get a couple of scares out of you because it will.  Without anything to use in the game but your cell phone, glow sticks, and flare sticks for light can get to be real challenging but makes it a unique experience.  I think Daylight is pretty great for an indie game and would recommend checking it out but for a real scare fest I would suggest sticking to a game like Outlast.
