Themed games for holidays usually feel like they are just made to bank off of the occasions.  Costume Quest is a game that sticks out in my mind that was actual a good holiday themed game.  Teyon’s Bird Mania Christmas 3D does take advantage of the holidays but is also a quality game.

The gameplay is simple arcade style, where you just move up and down to avoid trees and elves in airplanes.  You can earn multipliers by using the L or R button to spin into other birds.  The point of the game is to use your one life to get the highest score possible.  Points are earned by collecting stars or Christmas Baubles.  The inclusion of online leaderboards and achievements adds a replay value but at the end of the day, this is not a game you will be playing for hours on end in one sitting.  I did find myself playing it a bunch in short bursts though.

The graphics are cartoony and clean with an HD touch, but doesn’t look any better then your average iOS or android game.  The Christmas theme is just tacked on with your character wearing a Santa cap and there being snow and gingerbread men in the background.  I did really like the changing between daylight and nighttime which was a nice effect.  It would also slow the game down a little, which a fast as the game gets, is welcome at these points.  The soundtrack has a Christmas feel and it pretty catchy.

I would recommend this game to anyone that owns a 3DS and is looking for a quick game to play with a Christmas feel.  At only two dollars it really isn’t going to set you back and is fun to play in short bursts.  The leaderboards and achievements might pull you back in a little more often but it is what it is, a one level, high-score-athon.
