Nintendogs has been my only real introduction into the pet simulation genre, and for the most part it was a pleasant experience.  Having a penguin as a pet seems a bit odd to me, but I’m sure there is someone out in the world that has one.  I wasn’t sure what you actually do with a pet penguin, but I started up the game and found out quick.

So apparently, penguins like baths, skiing, playing memory games and putting puzzles together, because all of these activities make your pet penguin happy.  The Bathing mini-game has you rubbing the stylus around a shadow figure of the penguin to scrub him and then repeating this step to rinse him.  In the skiing mini-game you turn tiles to help the penguin collect flags and eventually reach the exit. The game progresses by giving you quests, that include ripping toilet paper off the roll in the form of math equations and various other mini-games.  You eventually earn coins that you can spend in the store to by costumes for your pet and can even level your pet up.  Everything that you do for your pet in this games leads to a short mini-game.  While some are fun, most have a free cell phone game feel.

101PP3D1The graphics aren’t better then anything that you would find on the N64 or even a cell phone.  The sound track is fitting for the game but doesn’t have anything memorable in it.  For what the game is the graphics work just fine, but I feel that in this day and age developers should go the extra distance and put a little more polish to the graphics engine.

The game would be a great learning tool for children, whether it be the somewhat educational mini-games, or the practice taking care of a penguin.  I wouldn’t recommend this game for anyone over the age of 12, as it is simplistic and will lose it’s luster rather quick.
