Free To Pay Friday – Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight

the file name is the acronym for free to play friday frozen free fall snowball fight ftpffffsf

There’s a subtle change to this week’s title this week.  Leave it to the mega money generating machine that is Frozen to yank tons of cash out of your wallet.

While Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight (henceforth known as FFFSF, the sound an angry cat makes) is technically a free download, to get any further than level 20 or so you’ll need to spend serious money on microtransactions to get past the nightmarish difficulty spike in the remaining 150ish stages.

The game plays out like Bejeweled or Candy Crush, a match 3 with powerups.  To complete a stage, you’ll either need to hit a score total, drop certain items to the bottom (crowns, scepters, ya know, Frozen stuff), or hit a point level in a certain amount of time, or a combination of a few of those.  This leads to significant frustration – especially for the young set that this game is intended for – but “helpfully” there are powerups at $1.99 to make the stages easier.

There’s also a local multiplayer vs. mode, which will cost you the extra price of a second controller.  Also, I hope you like playing as young Kristoff or Hans, because everyone else is locked behind the ubiquitous paywall.  Of course, they’re unlockable in the single-player game, but to get that far in the game, you need to buy consumable items t…ugh.

The point is, even if the game is free, it isn’t.  Get this if you already have a second controller, and your kid(s) want a Frozen game.  Just make sure your PSN Wallet is empty and you don’t have a credit card attached to the account.

Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight can be downloaded for free* on PSN.
