Nintendo unleashed a new firmware update upon the masses this evening, pushing the system to version 4.2.0-9U. It is currently unclear what the update actually did besides change the version number from the last update in May. Most likely is that it was another attempt to stop hackers and homebrewers, as there are reports that certain flash cards do not work anymore. They could also be readying the eShop for some big happenings on release Thursday, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up.
We’ll be sure to update this post if more information becomes available, but I would expect to see another “further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments” statement.
UPDATE! According to Google translated Nintendo of Japan, the following things were part of the update:
- Improving the safety of “Nintendo e-shop” such as adding character types available in the password you set when you save your credit card information.
- Improve the convenience and stability of the system
So basically, heed the words of Lt. Frank Drebin
